Chandavaram Buddhist site
One of the Ancient routes from North India to Kanchipuram in the South pass through Singarakonda Near Chandavaram. As Water is found through out the year in Gundlakamma River, Flowing Adjacent to Singarakonda , A large Buddist Monastic Establishment came in to existence on Singarakonda , During Satavahana times in 2nd Century B.C and Flourished up to 6th Century A.D for about 800 Years.
As in the other Stupas in Andhra Pradesh , Ayaka Pillar Denoting the important events in Buddha’s life like the great renunciation, are found on the four sides of the stupa, attached to it. As in the stupa at sanchi , in this stupa is found evidence of an ornamental railing with four gate ways , all carved in stone. Stone slabs with carving work done in Sanchi and Barahut Styles are found fixed on the drum wall of the stupa. As Buddha in these sculptured panels , is not in Human form , But as Bodhi Tree, Throne , Piller of Fire , Dharmachakra and Stupa , It is to Believed that for a long time , This Place was Strong hold of Theravada Buddhists.
