GRANITE (BLACK GALAXY)

Granite Black Galaxy is unique and world famous which is available only in Chimakurthy Mandal, Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh, India.

INTRODUCTION:

The world famous Galaxy Granite deposit is located in Chimakurthy, R.L.Puram, Budawada and Devarapalem villages of Chimakurthy Mandal, Prakasam District. The quarry zone lies in between 23rd to 26th KM stone on either side of Ongole – Nandyala -Kurnool State High Way road. The active quarry zone falls in Survey of India Toposheet No. 57 M/14 and lies in between the N15O35I15II – 15O35I20II North latitude and 79O48I20II – 79O50I35II East longitudes.

Black Galaxy Granite is located in a Chimakurthy village in the Ongole district of Andhra Pradesh. Indian granite, “Black Galaxy” has been shining brightly for over 35 years upto now. Black Galaxy Granite is also called Star Galaxy, Galaxy granite, and Gold Star Granite. Its reputation as being more durable and stronger than regular granite has been enormous, with about 10 million cubic meters of the material ever sold.

Quarry Lease was granted in the year 1983 for the 1st time in favour of Sri K. Bala Krishna Reddy, initially he tried to promote the material under the trade name of SHOBHA material, but there was no success. Later on the lease was transferred in favour of M/s. Yak Granite Industries (P) Ltd., and they promoted the material under the Trade name of “Galaxy Granite” and got success. The working activity in this area was started in the year 1987 by M/s. Yak Granite Industries (P) Ltd., (M/s. Enterprising Enterprises of Chennai) and after that market was established in domestic as well as international due to its aesthetic look. At present there are 135 quarry leases existing for Black Galaxy Granite covering a total extent of 452.784 hectares, duly providing employment for about 10,000 members directly and 25,000 members indirectly.

A Black Galaxy Granite slab will mostly be black with some older roots punched into the shower base. It will blush a slight, gold-veined yellow when the slabs are fresh. That yellowness disappears within hours as the black colour increases. In that way, it is hauntingly like a galaxy, grand and deep. The name describes this stone and shows that do not need to pick greatly specific slabs with this colour (although it never damages). During this time, some of the slabs may have a vein or a group of copper flecks showing, although most of these occurrences happen.

Availability of the Product:

This Galaxy Granite is being quarried extensively and intensively by private entrepreneurs owing to its great demand in export market. The Galaxy Granite quarrying started in 1987 by the entry of M/s. Enterprising Enterprises (Granite companies). The first lease was granted in the name of Sri. K.Bala Krishna Reddy in Errakonda area, west of the Galaxy body. During the first phase i.e., 1978 to 1988 little quantities were exported. After 1988-89, new entrepreneurs entered with the nature and behavior of the Galaxy body. In the 1^st and 2^nd phases, only big gangsaw blocks were exported to European countries mainly to Italy. After 1999 the total scenario changed and total exports geared up by the entry of China and other South –East Asian countries. During this phase the big blocks as well as small blocks were also accepted by the buyers, simultaneously the Indian domestic consumption also increased

There are about 140 Black Galaxy Granite leases in force, but operationally, there are only about 40 companies actively engaged in quarrying. The total extent of the land under quarrying is 452.784 hectares. Up to now the quarrying companies’ operation went up to a depth of 70Mts on average below ground level and it is estimated the quarrying operations can be continued in this mining area for another 15/20 years.

Process Of Making  Granite (Black Galaxy): 

Preparation of identification of site:

Searching for mineral deposits is the first step of the mining lifecycle.  During this stage, large areas are often evaluated by airborne or ground-based surveys, such as those conducted by the BC Geological Survey.

Quarry Locations:

Black Galaxy granite is from sheet bedrock quarries near Cheemakurti, Budawada, Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh, Southern India. There may possibly be in excess of 100+ Black Galaxy Granite quarries as detailed in the Annexure. This operation includes clearing of bushes and formation of roads, establishment of infrastructure like office room, rest shelter, toilets, mineral stock yard, waste dump place etc.,

Before begin drilling into Granite to gather all of the supplies and materials need in one place. Making sure have everything need ahead of time helps avoid delays mid-project. It also helps stay safe while working. Make a list of the tools, supplies and materials need for the project and bring them to the work area.

• Tape measure: A reliable tape measure the space of working on and determine which tools and bits need to accomplish the task.
• Hammer drilland bits: A hammer drill is designed to drill into hard materials like Hard rock using a combination of rotary drilling and a hammering motion.
• Safety equipment: Granite rock cutting creates a lot of dust, debris and jagged edges. To Keep safe as using well-fitting safety equipment.

For this project, can also use a hammer drill. A hammer drill combines the rotary motion of a standard drill with a mechanized hammering motion. This combination makes it possible for a hammer drill to pass through hard materials.Hammer drills usually have stop bars. To use a stop bar to set an exact depth where  want the drill bit to stop. To set the stop bar, follow the drill manufacturer’s recommendations. Next, fit the hammer drill with a  in your desired size. Whenever actively drilling to  wear safety goggles, gloves and ear protection.

Prep the drill

 

Before drilling, determine the drill bits  need for the project. If using the correct size drill bit is often included on the packaging. Otherwise, use a 5/32-inch bit for concrete screws that are 3/16-inch in diameter. Use a 3/16-inch bit for 1/4-inch screws. Keep spare bits in the correct size on hand. Working with masonry can wear out a bit faster and result in badly drilled holes.     For masonry will need to use a hammer drill or an SDS drill that is able to handle heavy-duty drilling.  Using a regular cordless drill will end up causing damage to your bits and drill.   As this type of drilling involves a lot of friction, it is essential to keep the drill’s RPM as low as possible.

Support from the state and Central Governments funds allocations:

The entrepreneurs are approaching different financial institutions for obtaining the required financial assistances to establish the Granite processing units especially in Prakasam District on average 15 to 20 Units per month.  The state Government is also sanctioning subsidies byway of investment  subsidy, GST reimbursement, interest subsidy on term loans, Power subsidy etc.,  ranging from 5% to 45% basing on subsidy to the OC/BC/SC/ST categories.  The Central Government is also extending subsidy on purchase of sophisticated/new technology machineries  under various schemes.

          For  imparting  trainings to the mining staff and workers a dedicated Vocational Training Centre established by the State Government at Ramatheerdham in Chimakurthy Mandal in the year -1998.  The required trainings are conducting in different categories pertaining to quarry working and granite processing through this Vocational Training Centre.  After completion of the training program the certificate are issuing to the successful candidates.  And the MSME DI, Hyderabad and NSIC, FIEO etc., organizations is to conduct awareness programmes in technology upgradation in granite industries.

• Selecting the lightest block that meets the performance criteria for the design. Where possible, reduce the use of heavier blocks by laying thinner dense blocks flat instead of thicker dense blocks upright or using lighter trench blocks with handholds.

Control: Even if you minimise some of the risks this way, you are still likely to have to lay blocks. Control the risk by following the information below.

Setting out –

avoid handling the blocks as much as you can. Get them delivered as close as possible to the point of use (eg make sure there are enough loading bays). Check they are set down on level ground – preferably without double stacking. Use pallet trucks, sack trucks etc where possible if you need to move blocks around the site. Otherwise handle / carry blocks close to the body. Do not carry them up ladders. Arrange the work area to avoid over-reaching or twisting – eg by ensuring easy access to all sides of the block stack.

Laying height –

set working platforms etc so that block laying can take place between chest and knee height. Widen foundation trenches so that you can lay blocks within it rather than stooping below foot level.

Mortar spot boards –

set these at a comfortable height so that you do not need to bend all of the time or reach too far.

Dense and specialist blocks –

use mechanical handling solutions where possible. Relying on two people to heavier handle blocks is not usually a suitable solution to the risk.

Gloves –

consider wearing appropriate gloves when handling blocks to protect against cuts and abrasions from sharp edges. These will also protect your hands against cement / mortar risks when laying the blocks.

Waste removal & transportation to dump:

Mining Activity Management Plan Prakasam district leads in granite mining in the state with discovery of Black Galaxy Granite in the Chimakurthy area. Apart from the above granite mining, the other principal minerals being mined in the district are Road metal, Gravel & Quartz, Slate Stone, Iron ore, Barytes, Silica Sand etc.

Chimakurthy mine cluster is famed for the Black Galaxy Granite deposits, not found anywhere else in the world. The Black Galaxy is gabbro-norite rock with deep black colour background and thin medium golden cloured flakes floating in the mass which is bronzite mineral. The granite Mining activity is spread on both sides of Ongole -Kurnool Road in Chimakurthy in pockets and mining activity is being carried out below ground level at a depth of about 60-70mts.

The black galaxy granite mines have adopted best practices like wire saw cutting with water cooling system to reduce dust emissions; usage of Non-electric (delay) detonators/ detonating system reduced vibrations from the activity and chemical powder / expanso powder usage for splitting the granite blocks reduced the air and noise pollution.

APPCB is regularly monitoring the compliance of consent conditions stipulated and issuing directions/stop production/closure orders to the mining units as and when any environmental violations were observed.

There is no polluted river stretch in Prakasam district. Plan of action to control pollution in mining activity involves in the following: S. No Action Points Action to be taken by & Time line 1. Monitoring of Ambient Air Quality in the mining areas and due compliance of the Continuous monitoring of the mining areas by APPCB 29 ambient Air Quality Standards. (APPCB : Once in Three months) 2. Enforcement on air pollution control measures and compliance of Environmental Clearance & Consent conditions APPCB to ensure compliance of environmental conditions by the mining units. (APPCB :Continuous action)

Environmental protection measures:

1)   Introduction of wire saw cutting with water cooling

2)   Introduction of Dust collector attachments to the drill unites

3)   Water sprinkling for suppression of dust from haul roads

4)  Development of green belt.

Environmental Impact Assessment study has been carried out within an area of 10 km radius around the Mine area as per the Terms of Reference issued by SEIAA, Andhra Pradesh. The various steps involved in Environmental Impact Assessment study of the project site are divided into the following phases:  Identification of significant environmental parameters and assessing the existing statusØ within the impact zone with respect to air, water, noise, soil and socioeconomic components of environment.

Study of various mining activities of the proposed mine to identify the areas leading toØ impact/ change in environmental quality.

Quantification/prediction of impact for the identified activities and to study the level ofØ impact on various environmental components.  Evaluation of impacts after superimposing the predicted/ quantified scenario over theØ baseline scenario.  Formulation of Environmental Management Plan for implementation in the project.

In this operation cutting of granite blocks 10mm to 20mm thickness slabs & polishing the same are involved 

Black Galaxy Granite Types:

Not all Black Galaxy granite is the same and different markets prefer different types. The gold specks are due to the presence of ferrous rich Enstatite (Bronxite) and can be broadly divided into three types based on the size of the gold coloured specks as:

1. Large grained Black Galaxy (a.k.a. Popcorn)
2. Medium grained Black Galaxy
3. Small grained Black Galaxy

The distribution of the Galaxy grains are also a determining price factor and very much a personal choice. When heavily-veined Black Galaxy granite is available it is usually known as Starburst Galaxy granite.Black Galaxy granites can have slightly varying background colors thus making it extremely difficult trying to match supplies from different quarries

1. Dark Black
2. Dark with a Greenish/Black tinge
3. Dark with a Whitish/Black background

Some Black Galaxy granites may require an epoxy resin application since they may appear to have slightly open veining. The integrity of the granite is not affected with the epoxy applied solely for a visual effect to give it the smooth finish demanded by many purchasers. It is most unlikely that any type of sealer can successfully be applied to Black Galaxy granite.

Black Galaxy Granite Quality Standards

Grading standards for Black Galaxy Granite is generally accepted to be as follows:

1. Black Galaxy Q1 First Choice: Slabs and tiles clean of any visible veining
2. Black Galaxy Q2 Standard Quality: Slabs and tiles with one or two visible veins known as mergeable lines.
3. Black Galaxy Q3 Commercial Quality: Slabs and tiles with two, three or more visible veins known as mergeable lines.

These lines do not affect the integrity of the material and are usually only visible from behind or very close up.

Surface Finish

polished surface but is also available as honed, leather/satin, river-washed/antique, thermal/flamed, brushed and sandblast finish. We never use colour enhancers.

Sealing

Test with a small sample. It is most unlikely that a sealant can be used on Black Galaxy granite due to the very tight grain formation, attempts at sealing it could actually create a residue film build-up.

There are quarries yielding selectable, grades of granite with blocks suitable for gang saw size down to economical tile-sized and monument blocks. There is always a big demand for these blocks therefore for larger projects it is extremely important to give considerable advanced notice for its requirement .

Extraction commenced in the very early 80s. For commercial projects it is important to ensure that blocks are selected from the same quarry face, do not try and match-up with alternative black granite sources.

Rough blocks are usually exported by Break Bulk however intermodal containerization is available at extra cost. Finished products are packed into sea-worthy wooden crates and loaded into containers.
